Internal Family Systems (IFS) or 'Parts' therapy is a transformative and evidence-based model of psychotherapy that helps individuals understand and heal their internal psychological world. Developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz in the 1980s, IFS is based on the idea that the mind is naturally multiple, consisting of different "parts" that each have their own thoughts, feelings, and roles. Rather than viewing these parts as problematic or pathological, IFS sees them as valuable members of an internal system that, when properly understood and guided, can work harmoniously to promote healing and self-awareness.
At the core of IFS therapy is the concept of the Self, which represents a person’s true essence—compassionate, wise, and capable of leading their inner system. When a person is in touch with their Self, they experience calmness, clarity, confidence, and connection. However, through life experiences, particularly trauma or emotional wounding, parts of the psyche can become burdened with pain or take on extreme roles to protect the system. The Three Types of Parts in IFS/Parts categorizes parts into three main roles:
The Healing Process in IFS/ Parts therapy aims to restore balance to the internal system by helping individuals develop a relationship with their parts and access their Self. The therapeutic process typically follows these steps:
Why IFS is Unique IFS stands out because it is a non-pathologizing approach—it does not view parts as disorders to be eliminated but rather as aspects of the self that need understanding and care. It is also empowering, as it teaches individuals to become their own healers by accessing the wisdom of their Self. Through IFS, individuals can cultivate self-compassion, heal trauma, and experience a greater sense of internal peace, ultimately leading to a more fulfilling and authentic life. IFS or 'parts' therapy is considered best practice in the treatment of CPTSD and Dissociation by The International Society for Treatment of Trauma and Dissociation (ISSTD).
